As a natural extension of college counseling, Dr. Maschal provides early career advising. She begins by helping students translate their experiences in both high school and college into language that resonates with employers and guides them to think deeply about the type of professional life they want in the future. Her expertise stems from her talents as a storyteller, researcher, and networker—skills she helps students develop that prove beneficial far beyond their careers.
She also guides college students on how to take advantage of advising services at their new institutions, offering hourly or semester-by-semester support to ensure they are making the best use of the resources available to them on campus and providing individualized guidance on course selection and extracurricular activities, and how to maximize summers and graduate on time.
Mapping out a “career strategy” early on can be especially helpful as students seek to gain meaningful and best-fit internships and other pre-professional opportunities. Dr. Maschal helps students with:
- Internship exploration
- Resume, CV, and cover letter drafting and editing
- Developing and maintaining a presence on LinkedIn
Early career applicants’ digital footprint and the presence of a digital portfolio are vital, and Dr. Maschal offers individualized guidance on both. It’s a no-brainer to create a digital portfolio when applying to college (LinkedIn, personal website, or blog), and similarly, college students who are looking for internships and full-time jobs need their digital and social media footprint to help them stand out from the crowd, not blend in.
