I am often asked when is the best time to start planning for college. I think it is wise to talk generally about college as early as middle school, and then again in a more concrete way in 9th grade. By 10th and 11th grades “college talk” should be fairly consistent—especially if you are or have a student who is aiming to attend a selective college or university. That being said, the majority of my work with students—which includes applying for summer programs, finalizing standardized testing plans, compiling school lists, writing a personal statement and resume—starts in 11th grade and gets fully underway in the second half of junior year. So, right now!
